CARE TIP
Gut-Loading Tips for Feeder Insects
- Duration: Feed insects 24–48 hours (crickets) to 72 hours (roaches) before feeding to your reptile.
- Best Foods: Dark leafy greens (collard greens, mustard greens, kale), butternut squash, sweet potatoes, carrots, broccoli, and commercial gut-load diets.
- Foods to Avoid: Citrus fruits (toxic to some reptiles), spinach, iceberg lettuce (low nutrition), and rhubarb.
- Hydration: Use water gels, sponges, or damp paper towels to avoid drowning insects.
- Method: Separate insects into a "gut-loading" bin, allowing them to gorge on the high-calcium, nutritious diet.
.
General Feeding Schedules for Reptile
- Juveniles: Typically require daily feeding (once or twice a day) due to rapid growth.
- Adults: Usually fed every other day or 3-4 times per week.
- Specific Examples:
- Bearded Dragons: Daily (Juvenile), 3–4x per week (Adult).
- Leopard Geckos: Every other day (Juvenile), 2–3x per week (Adult).
- Snakes: Once a week (most species) to every two weeks depending on size.
- Supplementation: Dust insects with calcium powder (with or without
D3𝐷3) 2–3 times a week, as gut-loading may not provide 100% of required calcium
KEY SAFETY TIPS
- Variety is Key: Feed a mix of different greens and veggies to insects to ensure a balanced nutritional profile.
- Immediate Feeding: Feed gut-loaded insects immediately after the 24-48 hour window to ensure nutrients are still in their gut.
- Cleanliness: Keep the gut-loading container clean to prevent disease
